Chapter Twelve

Opal stared at the percolator on her kitchen counter, willing it to hurry up.

After devouring each other once more—which included Adrian putting those textured fingertips to excellent use—they’d collapsed in exhaustion, of both body and mind. Opal had drifted off to sleep against his cool, lightly pebbled chest, somewhat convinced she was already dreaming.

Morning had brought with it the return of her shock. His, too. Despite the heights of pleasure they’d discovered the night before, they greeted each other shyly. All their new realities came rushing back.

Adrian seemed a touch unsteady in his new, albeit former, body, as if there were more than a few things he needed to relearn about himself. As great as her astonishment was, she couldn’t even imagine what he must be going through. He’d thought it a good idea to get himself into some water, heading to her bathroom to shower.

He offered her an invitation to join him, but Opal declined, making her way to the kitchen instead. Her decision was due in large part to her desire to give him a little time alone to sort through his thoughts.

Plus, he might need some water, but she really needed some coffee.

When the pot finally finished working its magic, she gratefully poured herself a mug and added a generous helping of cream. The first sip felt like roasty heaven.

Opal made her way to the picture window in her living room. Her eyes fell on her sketchbook, still open where Adrian had left it last night, before upending her entire world. She smiled softly. Most of that upending felt pretty good, actually.

Her wildest dream—and she did mean wild—had come true.

She raised her gaze to the waves, glittering diamond-like in the sunshine, as they crashed against the shoreline outside. Not everyone might agree, but given how vast and mysterious the oceans were, it hardly seemed far-fetched to her at all that the existence of someone like Adrian was possible.

That they were somehow fated to find each other? The sensation was heady indeed. Wholly unexpected, definitely a bit unbelievable…but most assuredly intoxicating.

Opal sighed.

That brought her back to the thought foremost in her mind in the light of day. The one that troubled her.

Where the hell do we go from here?

Despite everything they’d talked about the previous night, that particular topic hadn’t come up. Between the basic logistics of how any of it came to be, Opal’s fascination and desire to explore this new side of Adrian, and the revelation of their feelings for one another—not to mention the physical pleasure they’d wrought from each other—it was no wonder sleep had come for them.

But that one specific question loomed large this morning. Leaving Opal wary of just how complicated the answer might be.

The sound of her bedroom door opening pulled her attention back to the present. She turned to find Adrian, in all his lustrous purple, stark-naked glory, hovering in the doorway. He smiled, and her heart melted.

“Hi,” she breathed. “Did you have a nice shower?”

“I did. It was perfect.
